Being successful in an interview is vital to getting a new job, most people find interviews stressful.
But even if you're nervous, job interviews can be mastered through preparation that can, hopefully, lead to success in getting that new job.
PREPARATION
The most important thing you can do before your interview is to make sure you prepare properly. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the interview:
- Get a Job Description for the position you are going for. Find out exactly what you are going to be expected to do in the job. Then tailor your questions and answer accordingly.
- Ensure you have a spare copies of your CV, Qualifications etc ready to take to the interview.
- Get some background information on the company, check out their website etc.
- What are your strengths and why are you right for the role? This is one of the most common questions interviewees are asked, so take time to plan your answers.
- What are your weaknesses? Be aware of any weaknesses you have but have an action plan of how you will address them.
- Work out how you will travel to the interview - DO NOT BE LATE - Do a dry run in advance and ensure you are there on time. Also ensure you are dressed correctly.
THE INTERVIEW
You have made it to the interview, Now:
- Be polite and friendly but do not get carried away and behave like long-lost friends either.
- Be clean, fresh and smart. Do not over do the perfume/aftershave as it can be very off-putting.
- Be interested and interesting - make the effort to be enthusiastic and interested in what the interviewer is saying and keep your voice 'up' and positive no matter how anxious you feel inside.
- Be articulate and try to speak clearly and with confidence. Try also to give longer answers to any questions other than just a Yes or No.
- Be honest - do not lie about your previous experience or skills, it will backfire later on.
Below are some of the most common questions you may be asked - BE PREPARED:
- What are your weaknesses?
- Why should we hire you?
- Why do you want to work for us?
- Why did you apply for this position?
- Where do you see yourself in five years time?
- Why did you leave or are about to leave your current position?
- What salary are you seeking?
- What achievement in your life are you most proud of?
- What motivates or drives you?
- If you get the chance to ask questions - DO SO - have some prepared, this shows that you are interested.
After the interview - Smile, Shake hands and thank the interviewer for their time.
